We Are Accepting Applications For The 2015-2016 School Year
Dear BASIS parents, families and friends,
We have a wonderful opportunity to team with a volunteer program supported by Microsoft to bring computer science courses to our 8th-12th grade students. The program, TEALS (Technology, Education and Literacy in Schools) is a grassroots program that recruits, mentors and places passionate high tech professionals into high school classes as part-time teachers. The high-tech professional brings his or her subject knowledge and joins a BASIS Oro Valley classroom teacher (who has teaching and classroom management expertise) in a team-teaching model. TEALS provides training for both parties as well as course outlines based on successful college courses.
BASIS Oro Valley has been accepted as a 2015/2016 TEALS partner school! We will be offering Advanced Placement Computer Science. As you may know, students have requested this course for several years and we are excited to be able to offer it next year.
In order to succeed, BASIS Oro Valley needs to recruit volunteers from the Computer Science or Software Engineering fields to team-teach this course with a BASIS teacher. BASIS Oro Valley will schedule the course during the 1st period (done by 8:35am) to permit the volunteers to get to their regular jobs.
If you or someone you know works in the Computer Science or Software Engineering field and would be willing to help BASIS Oro Valley build a successful Computer Science program, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or 520-308-5220.
I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to partnering with you!
Head of School
BASIS Oro Valley, founded in 2010, is located in the northwest Tucson area and provides instruction in Grades 6-12. Proudly graduating its second class of seniors in spring 2014, BASIS Oro Valley is poised to earn the same national recognition as its sister schools.
BASIS Oro Valley lower school program focuses on building organizational and study skills and creating the deep knowledge base necessary for students to tackle the demanding AP-based upper school curriculum. Taught by teachers who are experts in their fields, students master the foundations of language, math, and science by taking courses like Latin, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics as distinct disciplines. By seventh grade, students begin studying a second language and are exposed to principles of formal logic to bolster critical thinking and problem-solving skills at an early age.
The BASIS Upper School, beginning in Grade 8, is consistently ranked as one of the top-ten high school programs in the country by U.S. News, Newsweek, and The Washington Post. Upper School students take Honors and Advance Placement® courses across the academic spectrum. By mastering a wide array of material, graduates of BASIS Oro Valley establish themselves as prime candidates for the most selective institutions of higher learning and go on to become advanced scholars, professionals, and lifelong learners.
BASIS Oro Valley Primary opened August, 2014 to more than 700 students in Grades K-5. The school, located adjacent to BASIS Oro Valley on Oracle Road south of Tangerine Road, will have students matriculate to BASIS Oro Valley for 6th through 12th Grades.
In our K-4 program, students are not just taught content, but also very vital organization skills, time management, and study habits. The curriculum includes a wide array of classes ranging from English, Math and Science to Mandarin, Physical Education (both traditional and Kenpo), Music, Drama, and Art. Additionally, BASIS Oro Valley Primary is proud to offer a cutting-edged primary school teaching program, as well as our signature Connections courses, for grades 1 - 4.
Specifically, all primary school students will have two teachers per class -- one learning expert, who will remain with students as they rotate from subject to subject through the day, and one subject expert, each focusing on teaching specific subjects, in which they do indeed have expertise. Further, there are two different kinds of Connection courses. ʺAll Connectionsʺfocuses on the knowledge students acquire in each of their other classes, and brings it all together. Students, working in small groups, are presented scenarios in which they solve problems, drawing on the entirety of their learning. ʺFine Arts Connectionsʺdoes the same, but focuses on their Fine Arts knowledge, acquired in Music, Drama, and Art.
The 5th and 6th Grade curriculum is the foundation that makes possible the academic achievements of the upper school. 5th graders take Latin, General Science, Physical Geography, Math, Classics, English, PE, Art, and Music. 6th graders study Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Math, English, U.S. History, and Latin. 6th Graders also choose an elective; current electives include Art, Band, Drama, Guitar, and Creative Writing.
