BASIS Oro Valley, founded in 2010, is located in the northwest Tucson area and provides instruction in Grades 5-12. Proudly graduating its first seniors in spring 2013, BASIS Oro Valley is poised to earn the same national recognition as its sister schools.
BASIS Oro Valley features the same rigorous academic program as our legacy schools BASIS Tucson North and BASIS Scottsdale. The lower school program focuses on building organizational and study skills and creating the deep knowledge base necessary for students to tackle the demanding AP-based upper school curriculum. Taught by teachers who are experts in their fields, students master the foundations of language, math, and science by taking courses like Latin, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics as distinct disciplines. By seventh grade, students begin studying a second language and are exposed to principles of formal logic to bolster critical thinking and problem-solving skills at an early age.
The BASIS Upper School, beginning in Grade 8, is consistently ranked as one of the top-ten high school programs in the country by U.S. News, Newsweek, and The Washington Post. Upper School students take Honors and Advance Placement® courses across the academic spectrum. By mastering a wide array of material, graduates of BASIS Oro Valley establish themselves as prime candidates for the most selective institutions of higher learning and go on to become advanced scholars, professionals, and lifelong learners. MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL:
Dear BASIS friends and families,
Since joining the BASIS family seven years ago, I have been able to watch firsthand our growth, our challenges, and our successes. I left a University of Arizona Adjunct Lecturer position to become the Grade 5 Latin and Classics teacher at BASIS Tucson. I distinctly remember trying to describe my new job to colleagues, students, and friends. I finally explained it as, “I teach college prep to fifth-graders. It seems to be working.”
And indeed, it is working. When BASIS opened our campus at Oro Valley in 2010, I brought with me my Latin curriculum, as well as the belief that we provide an education like no other. In the years since, as Latin teacher, as Lower School Director, and now as the Head of School, I have been able to watch those first BASIS students grow and flourish in the rigorous academic environment we offer.
BASIS Oro Valley today offers a full program, Grades 5-12. We graduated our first thirteen seniors this past May to a crowd of happily weeping parents and teachers. It is our unique sense of community, of collaboration, and of participation that allows our students to reach their goals. That commitment resulted in 100% college placement for our 2013 class. Our thirteen graduating seniors received $1,926,188.00 in merit based scholarships and included one Flinn Scholarship Finalist. Our students will enter college with every door open to their future.
At BASIS Oro Valley, we work hard and we play hard. Our annual Parking Lot Party is a perfect example. This year we had Pi in the Face, an Instant Poetry Booth, DNA Extraction, Silly String Wars, and a Talent Show rolled into one fantastic event. Our extra-curricular activities range from sports such as Basketball, Soccer, Flag Football, Volleyball, Cross Country and Kenpo, to the expected activities such as National Honor Society, Chess, Mathcounts, and Band, and onto the unexpected: the Whovians (a Dr. Who Club), a DJ club (which plays for all of our dances), and a Rock Climbing Club. Our students have traveled in the footsteps of the ancient Romans in Italy and climbed the cliffs of Costa Rica.
Welcome to BASIS Oro Valley. Imagine what our next three years will bring!
